See page 68 of The Eagle, 1941. In October 1940, Tennessee Tech inaugurated its first course in aviation. A unit of the Civilian pilot Training Program for the training of pilots was secured. Twelve students completed the course and all passed the examination for a private pilot certificate with every grade above eighty percent. Featured in the photograph is Ellen Dee Webb, the first female aviation pilot to graduate.

Memorial Gym was named in memory of those who served in World War I and World War II.
