Letter from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute President Everett Derryberry to the Chairman of the Tennessee State Board of Education regarding candidates for graduation, an Army-Navy Special Training Program, and a land purchase for Tennessee Tech. Enclosed with the letter is an official copy of the deed of gift of the land from the City of Cookeville to the State of Tennessee. The deed includes a restrictive racial covenant against people of African descent owning, renting, or leasing the land for 99 years. Names of the candidates for graduation are redacted to comply with student records privacy policies.

The Campus and Buildings series contains records and correspondence to and from President Derryberry about the planning, financing, construction, remodeling, and maintenance of buildings on campus. Buildings documented include student housing, athletic facilities, academic buildings, support buildings, and the President’s residence. Materials include architectural drawings, bids, blueprints, change orders, contracts, dedication programs, deeds, financial assistance program applications, inspection reports, invoices, newspaper clippings, plans, progress reports, proposals, specifications, and copies of Tennessee State Board of Education resolutions and minutes.

The collection documents William Everett Derryberry’s term as President of Tennessee Technology University (1940-1974) and his personal and professional life outside of the university. He managed the university through disruption during World War II, growth in enrollment after the war, physical expansion of the campus, integration and student movements during the 1960s and 1970s, and the university’s name change from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in 1965.
